OXFORD COUNTY: Denmark
DENMARK – Residents of this Oxford County town overruled a recommendation by the board of selectmen Saturday and gave the local library all of the money it was seeking.
The Denmark Public Library wanted $9,000 from the town, but the selectmen and budget committee was recommending that only $5,000 be appropriated.
Following a discussion at Saturday's town meeting, Denmark residents decided in a secret-ballot vote to give $9,000 to the library, according to Town Clerk Chery Booker.
Booker said that 47 people attended the meeting, which lasted just under two hours, at the Denmark municipal building. She called the turnout low. The town has around 1,100 residents, according to the latest available Census data.
Most of the town's spending proposals were approved by voters without changes, according to Booker.
She said that elections for the planning board, board of selectmen and fire chief were held Friday night, but none of the races were contested.
CUMBERLAND COUNTY: Chebeague Island
Residents in the new town of Chebeague Island approved a $2.7 million municipal budget and a $901,000 school budget at their second annual town meeting Saturday.
Voters also re-elected Donna Damon to serve a three-year term on the five-member board of selectmen. Beverly Johnson was re-elected to a three-year term on the school committee.
The town’s $2.7 million budget is a $10,700 increase over the current budget. Most of the increase resulted from debt payments the island incurred when it separated from the town of Cumberland and Maine School Administrative District 51 to become its own town last July 1, according to town administrator Scott Seaver.
The adopted school budget is a decrease of $15,000 under the current budget. It now must go to town voters on Tuesday for validation, a new state law requirement.
CUMBERLAND COUNTY: Sebago
A measure allowing the town to accept a donation from the Sebago Historical Society and use it for the design and construction of an addition to the society’s display barn was withdrawn at Sebago’s annual town meeting Saturday.
About 65 to 70 voters showed up for the meeting, a figure which board of selectmen chair Allen Crabtree called disappointing: “But, when we have an issue that’s controversial, it’s really packed, so I guess that means people are happy with what we’re doing.”
Everything on the town warrant passed, except the historical society article, which was pulled. The historical society’s display barn is on town property, so the organization needs approval from the town to build an addition there. The town and historical society, however, had different ideas about the work that needs to go into the project. Ann Burns, president of the society, said the organization can likely do the project for a cheaper cost without seeking out professional design services and site work, as stipulated in the article on the town warrant.
The historical society and town will meet to discuss how to work together on the project before proceeding.
Also at the meeting, the town honored Michele Bukoveckas, who has served as town clerk in Sebago for 10 years.
ANDROSCOGGIN COUNTY: Leeds
Residents approved a $757,863 budget at Saturday's annual town meeting, a 3 percent reduction from last year's budget.
About 63 people attended the meeting at the Leeds Central School, according to Town Clerk Jane Wheeler. Every part of the proposed budget was approved, she said.
The budget decreased in part because the town made its final payment on some outstanding debt last year, Wheeler said.
In elections Friday, Dwight Buckley was elected to an open seat on the Board of Selectman, defeating Michael Burgess Jr. The vote was 108-13.
