FRANKLIN COUNTY: Eustis
EUSTIS -- About two dozen voters made it to the annual town meeting Saturday in a snowstorm Saturday, approving a nearly $612,000 operating budget where the biggest discussion was on support of the local snowmobile club.
The budget is about $3,000 higher than last year. All articles were approved as recommended by selectmen.
There was a strong contingent of snowmobile enthusiasts there to show support for the $7,500 request from the Arnold Trail Snowmobile Club.
On the club's Web site, it urged participation in the town meeting "in case anyone tries to question the town's contribution."
The club maintains nearly 130 miles of well-marked trails that are a big economic draw to the community. The club's request has gradually increased from $2,000 several years ago.
According to Town Treasurer Sandra Scribner, the state reimburses the town only by about $2 to $3 for each snowmobile registration, which ranges from $33 for residents to $68 a season for non-residents.
Eustis last year received back $1,416 from the state.
The money is funneled back to the local clubs to help maintain the trails, but the rest of the request is raised through taxation.
Some community members have complained about the cost, Scribner said. But business people spoke about the benefits snowmobilers bring to the local economy and the jobs that are provided.
Voters also approved amending the new Fire Department Service Billing Ordinance that exempts Eustis/Stratton taxpayers and residents.
The ordinance was adopted last year because of the large number of accidents involving tractor trailers, many of which are from Canada or out of town.
It allows the fire department to bill insurance companies to get compensated for services. Insurance companies will not reimburse towns for services unless there is an ordinance or town policy in place.
In contested elections, incumbent Planning Board member Scott Spatcher won over Lori Lamont, 23 to 12.
